Applying for a scholarship program to study at a foreign University

IELTS GT Writing Task 1 (Letter Writing) Sample:

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

You are interested in applying for a scholarship program to study at a foreign University.

Write a letter to inquire about the course. In your letter:

      - explain which course you are interested in
      - tell what you know about the University
      - explain why you should receive the scholarship

You should write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write your own address.

Begin your letter as follow;

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to get some information about a specialized course that you offer in your university in Tokyo. I would like to get admitted in 'Humanities and Sociology' course in your renowned university as a scholarship-granted candidate.

In fact, University of Tokyo is one of the leading universities in Japan and one of the first seven universities in the country. The university caters the needs of thousands of local and foreign students and has a good reputation for research works. Getting an opportunity to pursue my education in this university would help me to contribute to the betterment of the mankind. I also in need the scholarship you grant for international candidates to continue my academic activities in the university. In fact, as a foreign student in Japan, it would be quite hard for me to bear all the academic and other costs and hence receiving the scholarship would be the best solution for me. I have gone through the requirement for the scholarship and I am quite confident that I fulfil all the requirements.

Therefore, I would be highly grateful to you if you kindly inform me with the necessary information regarding getting a scholarship in your university and other measures. I have attached all my academic certificates and related documents for your consideration.

I am Nicolas Wilson, have recently finished my Bachelor degree in Computer Science from the University of Ocland and want to pursue my Master's degree at your university. Being granted for the scholarship that you offer would allow me to continue my education in your university.

I was awarded the Distinctive Merit Award for my excellent academic performance. I got CGPA 3.98 out of 4.00 and would like to finish my Master's degree in Computer Science. I have chosen your university as I find it one of the best universities in the UK. The University of Birmingham is ranked 14th in the UK and one of the top ten universities for Computer Science. In terms of the student number, it is the fourth largest university in the UK and its progress in the recent years is enviable.

I have gone through the scholarship requirements for the post-graduate admission seekers and I am quite confident I am one of the deserving candidates. I do not come from a very wealthy family and the scholarship would help me do even better in my studies. I would really appreciate your time to consider me as a potential scholarship candidate to your university.
